I'm thinking about buying something new...any input about either of these, or something else? I'd want to stay in the 40 cal range...but what brand has the most reliability and ease of use...home defence. budget is around 500 at the moment. Thanks Jon, good advice. This afternoon i went and shot a few different glocks(17,17c,23) good stuff, but i liked the ruger p345 the most. thanks all- gonna add the ruger to my meager collection.

Find a range that rents .... always try before you buy ...Glocks are preferred by law enforcement because of the integrated trigger and grip safety ... in short there isn't really a safety if you grip the gun with your finger on the trigger ....because of this there have been alot of accidental shootings .... Why do you want the weapon.....do you have a need to draw and fire quickly (like a cop on a traffic stop) then yes the Glock .... There were shooting incidents where law enforcement forgot to take the safety off ... that's why the Glock is so popular ..there is not lever or button to press the fire ..just grip & go.... I have the seperate safety ... I hate the accidental discharge potential of a weapon I carry on my person..... I prefer to think before I fire. But to each his own...... You do test drive a car before your buy onw right ..... when you invest the money in something for self defence you should know how it works and handles before you take it home! Happy Huntin'

I have both, but I prefer the Glock 21 or 21C (45acp), both are truly a pleasant shooting firearm. The only problem I have with the 27 is that the lower receiver isn't as beefy and I feel more recoil with it compared to the 21, you will of coarse feel even less with any of the compensated models, which I personally like. If at all possible find a indoor shooting range that rents guns to give them a try, there is nothing worse that having a fire arm that you are not happy with. Stay safe and have fun.

The arguement can be made that any 1911 is the most popular handgun right now because most gun makers are making a version of the old slabside. I carry a .45 Springfield 1911 A-1 GI it ran me around $500 no FTE,FTF There are companies that make a 10 MM in the 1911 frame, which is about the size of .40 S&W but is more powerful I also carry a Springfield XD 9 that is a fun weapon. I know that they have the XD in a .40

I would not recommend the baby Glock in any caliber. Granted it is small and easy to conceal, but it is hard to control. I own a full size Glock Model 22, in the .40 S&W caliber. It is one super gun, and This is what I would recommend. The next smaller size is the Model 23, which is an inch shorter barrelwise, and a quarter inch shorter in the butt. Choose what you want wisely, because once you leave the store, the gun is yours, no exchanges.

Might want to take a look a Sig Saur also. I believe they are the best all around shooting semi I've ever shot

Glocks are considered to be very good. Although I recently sold my Glock 22 for a Springfield XD 9 mm. Personally it shoots better than the Glock. Taurus are brazilian made. Cheap knock off's of a Baretta. Personally I prefer the XD, since my shot group is far better. They also have them in 40 cal. and for around the same price as the Glock (if you are Law enforcement)

The Sig and the Glock are the two most commom US weapons used by police. Really a toss up which one is used most. I am a personal Glock fan, but don't like the baby glock

I am a federal agent and use my handgun about twice a month, when I first started I was told that glocks are mandatory.I carried a 45 caliber and was really dissatisfied with its performance. The only great feature is the safety position on the gun!I presently carry and prefer a Smith and Wesson 3.75, 45 caliber, while the safety is not as good as the glock the stopping power is greatly appreciated. My wife uses a 9mm for home protection and shoots it very accurately. The stopping power is not to my caliber but it is perfect for her.
