Which is better, a Glock 26, a Glock 19, or a Glock 17?

I'm thinking about buying a gun to protect myself. I'm not a gun guy.

Since you are not a gun guy take the safety course first. If available in your State also get your CCW permit. Of the three (all excellent choices) the Glock Model 19 is most practical size-wise as it is between the full-size 17 & sub-compact 26. With Glock always remember: 1. Keep your finger outta the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot; 2. Store or carry in a holster that covers the trigger; 3. Never throw in cluttered drawer, purse or the like shell-in-chamber trigger exposed. Good luck and congrates on taking responsibility for protecting yourself. In this day and age we all need to do this. H

Glock 17 It's not as easy to conceal as the smaller models, but if this is just a house/range gun .It will be easier to control.

A glock 17L has a 6.02in barrel but other than that they are mostly the same in every way but I herd the 19 is more durable and seems to be reliable. but a glock 31 not on your list uses the .45acp as most ofthe rest uses a 9X19mm

I believe .40s&w to be the best caliber for self defense. It has a comparable impact to a .45 with a recoil similar to a 9mm. The smaller casing diameter also allows for geater magazine capaity over that of a .45. Glock is a great gun for personal protection because it has a low jam/failure rate, and there is no safety to remember to take off when you find yourself in a high stress situation. I would only recommend the G27(Sub-Compact) to seasoned shooters. It has a greater recoil because of the shorter Barrel and smaller Grip. This is not something you want to fumble around with if your life depends on it. Go to your local gun range, or gunstore, and see if they will let you try the full size and compact models, with and without barrel ports. That is the only way you will truely find what is most comfortable for you.

I would recommend the full size model 17. The compact model 19 is 1/4" shorter at the butt, and about an inch shorter at the barrel. The baby Glock in 9mm is a handful. Not much to grip onto for control.

If this is your first I would not suggest Glock then. I would purchase a firearm with some sort of exterior safeties on it. Taurus PT 24/7 or Millennium Pro Series, Springfield Armory XD series, Beretta Px4 Storm, all would be a better choice. Make sure you ask all your questions to the sales person at the gun shop you buy the gun at and sign up for a safety course too on top of the course you need to take for conceal carry.

Let me start out by saying good choice by going Glock. I would go with a 19 or a 17 just because of the versatility and controllability of it. If you are defending yourself in your home and you are not carrying it around concealed you can get away with a larger frame handgun. So I would go with a 17 because you have a larger grip and a more accurate barrel on it and it holds more rounds. A larger capacity handgun is a plus because you can never have enough bullets (I am not saying that alot of ammo makes up for poor marksmanship, but If you can carry more, why not. Better safer than sorry). The sub-compacts were designed to be carried concealed and a long grip, barrel and magazine capacity were sacrificed so it could be concealed. Good Luck and go get some shooting classes to go along with your glock everyone needs them even us gun guys. JACOB: THE GLOCK 21 IS CHAMBERED IN .45 ACP. THE GLOCK 31 IS CHAMBERED IN .357 SIG.
