The introduction of the .40 caliber cartridge was a revelation to the law enforcement and self-defense community. Never before in the history of small arms has a single cartridge caught on so quickly, and never before has a series of pistols been so sought after by police agencies and individuals. The GLOCK 22 is a full-size pistol; while at the same time providing big bore performance.

  • →What is the most widely used GLOCK pistol in federal agencies?
    2006-10-25 23:27:47
I have shot both the GLOCK 22 and 23 and love them both. I really like the compact 23 but I only know of the FBI giving their agents the choice between the 22 and 23. I was wondering, does the DEA or USM give you a choice between the two as well or do they only give their agents 22s (or other pistols)? I want to get a GLOCK that is used most by many different federal agencies so that when I get into basic training (in either the FBI, DEA, or USM,) I will be familar with the pistol I am given. Would the 22 be a better choice?

The #1 reason the GLOCK pistol, in any caliber, is favored by Law Enforcment agencies is because the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (their name at the time) ruled the GLOCK design to be "double-action only". This eliminates the liablity for "negligent discharge by being cocked and having a hair-trigger" lawsuits, since the GLOCK cannot be manually cocked (being as it has no hammer: it is stricker-fired, the striker being partially cocked by the movement of the slide, and the remainder by pulling the trigger). Other reasons are the out-of the box reliability of the weapon, and the ease of maintanence. Your question though, was *which* GLOCK is most used. At one time the answer would have been the model 17, when hi-cap 9x19mm weapons were in vogue.... Right now I'd say the model 22 over the model 23, simply because uniformed officers carry their pistols on the duty belt, and the better concealment qualities of the slightly smaller M23 have no advantage. You've had some good advice here about getting formal training. Easier to learn it right first than to have to unlearn and relearn later.
  • →would you purchase a.....?
    2007-02-05 18:14:04
if it was able to be put on the market would your purchase a full-auto glock 22 with a 29 round extended clip? wether it would be for personal use or illegal activites would you but this weapon? keep in mind the glock 22 uses a s/w .40 caliber bullet

Not having shot one (yet) I would figure it isn't made for target shooting. .40 has a good combination of speed and power which is probably why a lot of governments are switching to it. But having fired full automatic weapons before I don't see the practicality of it for personal protection. All full auto is good for is the thrill of firing a whole bunch of lead in a general direction, which would be especially true for a Glock handgun. An Uzi or a Mac 10 is hard enough to control with the stock. I could imagine trying to hold a full auto Glock.
  • →Police Duty Gun.?
    2008-01-31 10:31:10
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what I should carry on duty, when I join a police department (I am 16 now). I know I will be issued a Glock 22, but I am not the biggest fan of Glock. I think that they are a little small for me. I prefer a big framed gun. I was considering a Beretta 92-FS, but that is a 9mm, and has NO stopping power. So how about a 96 (Beretta 92-FS chambered for a .40 S&W)? What do you recommend pistol wise for patrol purposes?
    Answered By: Kenneth C
The 9mm has plenty of stopping power, especially with modern JHPs. I have seen more then one dead body with 9mm holes in them. Compared to .40 S&W and .45 ACP, it might not be the best option...But I will say a nine is fine and I would have no problems carrying one. Especially since you generally get 3-4 more rounds per magazine with one. Police rarely get into extended gun battles, but it has happened and if you did, you might wish you had the extra rounds compared to a bit more "power". I carried one in the Army for 4 years. There are dozens and dozens of duty weapons out there chambered in the .40 S&W that are suitable for patrol work. Sig, Glock, Beretta, H&K, FN, ect, ect, ect all make them. So most advice would be to try a few out and see what you like. About the Beretta 96, which you mentioned specifically, it is a fine weapon. Also keep in mind, most police departments only issue one firearm (most commonly the Glock 22) and you *have* to carry that. Others may have a short list of "approved" weapons. Only a small percentage of departments let you carry what you want.
  • →Can FBI agents carry a different firearm at personal expense?
    2007-08-29 09:04:44
I know that standard issue for the FBI is the Glock 22 or 23. However I was wondering if, like other Police Departments, the FBI allows agents to carry a different firearm of their choice if they purchase it at their own expense? Or do they have regulations saying agents must carry the Glock?
    Answered By: Matt
They have a whole list of authorized firearms that they can purchase and carry at their own expense. The list isn't going to be published, but if you ever meet an FBI Special Agent just ask them. It's not exactly a secret.

  • →Approved sidearms of the NOPD?
    2007-11-16 13:16:44
I've been watching K-Ville on tv and I've noticed an assortment of different sidearms on officers on the show. The official sidearm of the NOPD is the glock 22 (which Boulet carries), but Cobb carries what appears to be a stainless CZ 75 and and Cpt. Embry changes guns like he changes clothes. Is the show that innaccurate or are their other approved sidearms that can be carried
    Answered By: DAYDOOM
The officers get to choose them.
