Review Summary: Glock-26

If you told me five years ago I'd be praising a Glock, I'd say you were nuts. But, here I am!
Reviewed By Don from Dixie on Feb 6 2004
Manufacturer: Glock
The good qualities: Totally reliable, compact, natural pointing, low recoil, super night sights, conceals well. It's kind of nice-looking in a raunchy sort of way, like my first fiance.
The bad qualities: Slide release is a little hard to "one-hand"; should be ok after more use.
In a NutShell: A carry gun you can bet your life on. I know that it's not the "flavor of the month" these days, but the "Baby Glock" fits my hand well, has enough power with the hotter loads to do some damage, has light enough recoil to allow quick recovery and awesome double-taps, and yet allows me to spend only a few bucks per box of Winchester fmj's for practice.

Review Detail:

After badmouthing Glock pistols as high-priced plastic toys for many years, even though I never had fired one, something changed. I moved from the gun-restrictive North to the more enlightened South, where concealed carry is allowed. After I got my permit, I found that my full-sized Colt .45 auto, Browning Hi-Power and S&W .357 mid framer were all too heavy and bulky to carry around. My S&W Chiefs Special concealed well, but five rounds of .38 special ain't the greatest, and I've never been a expert double action shooter, what with a ten plus pound release. I wanted a gun that would point like like my hi-power, carry as light as my .38, have a decent magazine capacity and be gimmick and trouble free. After a lot of rental gun shooting at a couple ranges over the month, with compact .45's, 40's and 9mm's, I finally chose the Glock 26 with factory-installed night sights. Since I picked her up at the beginning of this week, I've put 400 rounds down range. The accuracy is good for a carry weapon, (no flyers) and the pointing is natural. I like the flat, heavy slide over the lighter frame......it all just works right. The recoil of a 9mm is light anyhow, but this baby barks no worse than my hi-power, at half the weight. I had to spend a little time getting used to the trigger and the short-grip, two-finger hold dynamics. While it feels like a double action, it trips off like a single, with a five pound break. Amazing. Now, the best part. No stovepipes, no feeding failures, none! I figured it would jam during break-in, but it didn't happen. A real confidence-builder. No manual safeties to remember. Just load it, pull the trigger, it goes "boom". Rock-solid reliable. The take-down for cleaning is simple; no tools required. Over the years, I've had my share of reliability problems with pistols, but I never much cared, because it was always only target practise. With a carry gun, it's a whole different situation. So now, I'm a convert. GLOCK ON !
