by Yahoo Answers: | → | →Good sidearm for security work? | | 2006-10-05 13:59:36 | | Hello!
I'm considering taking a job as an armed security guard to scrape together enough cash to go back to school. I'm familiar with firearms, the different actions, and calibers. However, I wanted some more imput from everyone out there. What would you choose as your preferred sidearm as a security guard? I've ruled out the .50AE Desert Eagle due to weight and over-penetration issues so don't go there. Here is what I have given serious consideration to:
Ruger GP 101 .357 Magnum
Berestta 92f (9mm) OR 96f (.40 S&W)
Glock 17 (9mm) or 22 (.40 S&W)
some 1911-style
I thought of the wheel gun because of it's reliability and simplicity of usage, though I've shot all of the other guns mentioned here.
I'm somewhat concerned with the 9mm round though. Do you think that this is still an effective man-stopper, or should I concentrate on a .40 S&W on up? Any other suggestions welcomed. Later!
Also, does anybody have any experince good or bad with the Ruger P-series pistols? I have a 10/22 and have fired the GP-100 revolvers and loved them both. | | Answered By: jarrgen
| | Being prior USAF Security Police (Forces), I carried the Beretta 92 for 12yrs and never had any issues. For an off duty weapon, I later carried a Beretta Cougar, which had no recoil but operated exactly the same as my 92, and so I wouldn't have to worry about muscle memory.
Now, though, I carry a Springfield XD40, which is essentially the same as the Glock (40) you mentioned, with the added grip safety of a 1911.
The problem here is buying a holster initially. Not a lot of holsters have been made for the XD line. I have a Safariland 6280 for leather duty gear, which is solid, but if you look for a less expensive holster, good luck. This one ran around $120. Or, if you have nylon gear, look for a Bianchi 7001, I think, which should fit.
Also, SE-FU, it is called a magazine, not a clip.
| → | →As a security guard should I carry a S&W Model 10 revolver or a Glock 17 pistol? | | 2007-11-10 15:28:36 | | We have our choice as long as we qualify with the weapon. The Glock can hold more rounds and can be reloaded faster. But the S&W model 10 is an old standby. The S&W model 10 in .38 special seems to be more accurate. Which would you choose? You can only carry one. We do not have the option of carrying a different gun other than these 2 so no answers like "I'd carry a 1911 in .45ACP". Our firm only lets us decide between these 2 firearms. | | Answered By: John T | |
| | If you can't hit what you're aiming at with the Glock, then choose the Model 10. If you can buy your own ammunition certainly buy +P. However, be aware that 9mm +P and +P+ 9mm ammunition is more powerful than +P .38 Spec., and if you're like most security guards your back-up will be a long time coming. You'll be better served to practice with the Glock 17 until you are proficient with it. I love my wheel guns, but in a gunfight you'll want that extra 12 rounds in the magazine. | |
| → | →Glock 17 9mm or Glock 22 .40 S&W? | | 2008-03-18 09:27:44 | | which would be better for a first handgun?
is the extra recoil of .40 worth the extra power? | | Answered By: handsome heckler
| | If you plan on shooting it alot I would get the g17 because the ammo is cheaper. If you live in a liberal state that won't allow you to have 17rd mags I would get the G22 since it uses 15rd mags. One thing to think about is. You can always get the G22 and make it shoot 9mm later by buying a LDW 9mm conversion barrel and a G17 mag, it would cost all of $115 before tax and shipping to make your G22 shoot 9mm. However you can not make your G17 shoot .40 S&W by simply buying a converson barrel and G22 mag. You will need to change the entire slide assembly and possibly the trigger housing (if you plan on carrying it), but that's a cheap part $4.97 at brownells.
I always encounter complete glock uppers for sale on ar15.com and snipershide.com for about $200-$250.
So I wouldn't sweat it to much cause you can always have either of the two pistols later if you hunt for a complete slide assembly.
| → | →Glock 17 Reviews? | | 2006-12-26 09:20:38 | | Can anybody please provide upsides/downsides to this firearm? I fired it at the range a few times and liked it, but would appreciate some informed perspectives from people who konw their stuff. Thanks. | | Answered By: Nancy | |
| | I own 4 glocks. two model 17's(one first generation and one third generation), one model 22 (40cal) and a 26 (baby glock 9).
I have worked at indoor shooting ranges since 1988 and glock is the only firearm that is capable of working with broken parts and still be reliable. No other manufacture can make that statement.
Beretta 92 is rated for 15,000 rounds.
Sig Sauer 226 is rated for 60,000 rounds.
Glock 17 is ratedc for 350,000+ rounds. We documented that many rounds through a rental gun before glock took it for advertisement.
If you like the way it feels in your hand and you like the way it shoots then you should buy it.
Polymer frame guns last longer than any other style frame. They give under recoil (flex) and alloy or steel do not.

| → | →cz75 or glock 17? | | 2007-06-24 09:33:40 | | for all-around use... | | Answered By: aceproceed | |
| | Totally personal preference on that one. Both are extremely popular, massively produced, and widely used pistols. The CZ-75 has been one of the most popular police sidearms in much of Europe, the Glock over here (though usually in .40SW).
The Glock is an ultra simple design, it has a slide stop and no other controls, no manual safety, decocker, nothing of the sort. If a round is in the chamber just pull the trigger to fire. The Glock 17 is a great weapon for the range or carrying. The CZ75 is a classic, very accurate due to the slide riding inside the rails, reliable, etc. If you're looking for a range gun you can't go wrong with either. For carrying, the same if you want a full sized pistol.
For a question like this, nobody can give you a definitive answer if they know what they're talking about. Both pistols have been produced in the millions and have proven themselves many times over. You have to try them out and decide which one you like.
| → | →Is a glock 17 more powerful or a walther ppk? | | 2007-03-07 00:33:44 | | | Answered By: The Big Shot | |
| | The Glock 17 is a 9mm, which is more powerful than a walther ppk, which is a .380ACP (i.e. 9mm short). If Walther makes the gun in 9mm, then the "power" will be about the same.
Either way, both of these calibers are on the low end of self-defense ammo in terms of power. You get great carrying capacity with the Glock and the Walther can be concealed very well.
